Vegrandis LLC of Fayetteville received a $150,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
The award is a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer for developing carbon nanopipettes CNPs. The development of the devices resulted from a collaboration between Vegrandis and the University of Pennsylvania. CNPs are cone-shaped devices that can be used for medical diagnostics, fluid handling in screenings and biomedical research.
Once Phase I is complete, Vegrandis will be eligible to apply for additional research in Phases II and II-B and funding from the NSF of up to $1 million.
Also in January, Space Photonics Inc. of Fayetteville started work on a $1 million Phase II Small Business Innovation Research contract.
Space Photonics is developing technology that allows satellites to communicate, monitoring their locations and distances from each other. The program is called “embedded ranging and synchronization for inter-satellite laser communications.” The technology will give the Department of Defense more control when flying multiple satellites in formations.
The program is being funded through the Air Force Research Lab at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico.
CEO Chuck Chalfant and Fred Orlando, chief technical officer, founded the company in 1999. The company has received more than $6.6 million through 21 SBIR awards.
