Orlumet, LLC, in collaboration with UALR's Nanotechnology Center, has developed revolutionary coatings for implantable medical devices. At present, devices such as dental and orthopedic implants are constructed from titanium. While titanium is inert, implants made from this material are prone to infections, slow healing, failure to integrate with surrounding tissue, and bone loss. In addition, hospitals are incurring tremendous costs due to failed orthopedic implants - costs that range from one-hundred to one-hundred and sixty thousand dollars on a per-case basis.

 

Orlumet's patent-pending implant surface coatings are designed to reduce the probability of infection, enhance the bonding of the implant to surrounding bone tissue resulting in increased mechanical strength, and promote faster and more effective healing for the patient. The company is initially targeting leading dental and orthopedic implant manufacturers.
